North Woods School Announcements

Friday – February 23rd, 2018

 

  • Congratulations to our District Spelling Bee winners Morgan Burnett (1st place) and Daebwe Chosa (2nd place)!

 

  • Girls Basketball players and managers are excused after 5th hour today for their game with Barnum. Bus leaves at 2:30 pm.

 

  • The National Honor Society will be hosting a Memorial Blood Drive on Monday, March 5. Students ages 16 and older can donate. If you are interested in donating, sign up during lunch today!

 

  • Juniors: If you signed up to take the ACT on Tuesday, February 27th, remember to bring a #2 pencil and your calculator. The test will begin at 8:30 AM and end at lunchtime. It will be in rooms 213 and 215.

 

  • CHANGE: Seniors – due to weather, the rep from Graduate Services will be here Wednesday, February 28th to take regalia orders.

 

  • Seniors: The local scholarship list was handed out. If you need a copy, please see Mrs. Stark.

 

  • Change: Now includes Grade 7 – 12 TAs, Peer Helpers, and Student Council Buddies: Please report to Room 201 today during Sr High 4th hour for training. Junior High will eat lunch with Senior High. Treats will be served.

 

  • Homework Help scheduled for Monday, February 26th is cancelled, but may possibly be rescheduled mid-week. The remaining dates stay the same (see reminders section below).

 

  • Students in grades 10-11: Itasca Community College is hosting a career fair on Friday, March 2nd. Anyone interested in attending must register with Mrs. Stark by today. Space is limited. We will leave school at 8:30 am and return by 2:30 pm.

 

  • On Saturday, March 3rd the International Travel Club is hosting Tacos & Trivia at the Cook Community Center. A taco dinner will be served from 3:30 to 7:30 pm. Take out will be available. Cost is $8 for adults $5 for kids 12 and younger. At 6:00 pm the trivia competition will begin. Teams of 1 to 6 people will compete in 10 rounds of trivia. Team registration is $25 and the winning team will take home 50% of the registration. Pre-registration is requested, but not required. Pre-register with Ms. Carstens or Mrs. Parson by emailing them at ccarstens@isd2142.k12.mn.us or dparson@isd2142.k12.mn.us

 

  • Junior Jamboree is March 14th! Tryouts will be held February 28th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cook Community Center, and are open to the community and anyone who missed out the last time. Winners will receive a cash prize - don't miss out on this fun night!

 

  • The Vermilion Youth Center is closing for three (3) days to disinfect areas to aid in the prevention of spreading the Influenza A Virus effective dates: February 22nd, 23rd, and 26th.

Reminders:

  • Reminder to New National Honor Society Members: Please pay your $10 dues as soon as possible. These can be given to Austin Chaulklin or Mrs. Stark.
  • To Grade 7-12 Students: Homework Help will be offered weekly. You must sign up weekly for the session you want. Space is limited to the first four students to email Mrs. Parson by the deadlines for each session. Sign up by 10:00 am of the day help is offered. Sessions will be held as follows from 3:15 – 5:15 pm:

Thursday, March 8 (deadline to sign up is 10:00 am March 8)

* Monday, March 12 & 19 (deadlines to sign up are 10:00 am March 12 & March 19)

You must bring your work and have a ride to pick you up. Nett Lake students must also notify Mrs. Parson if they need to take the Activity van/bus home (by 10: 00 am of the help day). Email Mrs. Parson at dparson@isd2142.k12.mn.us

  • Students in Grades 9-12- See the posters outside of the Counseling Office for more information on the following opportunities:

*UMD is hosting a Business Day on Monday, March 5th. Students will learn about business majors, careers and salary ranges, as well as talk to admission counselors and tour the Labovitz School of Business.

*Minnesota Business Venture is a one week summer residential opportunity for students to learn about business, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career direction. It is at St. Cloud State University (July 8-13) or St. John's University (July 22-27). The cost is $150, which includes room and board. Some financial aid is available.

*Michigan Tech hosts a variety of week-long Summer Youth Programs designed to create awareness of the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. If you are interested at exploring these programs, see Mrs. Stark by March 15th.

  • Job Opportunity for students age 17 and older: UPS in Virginia has immediate part time openings for sunrise and evening hours. Tuition reimbursement for college is also available, along with medical, dental and more. See the poster outside of the Counseling Office or go to www.upsjobs.com.
  • Bois Forte Education is sponsoring free Anishinaabemowin language classes will be held at the Nett Lake Youth Center (formerly B&G Club) every Wednesday at 3:00 pm and at the Lake Vermilion Youth Center (formerly B&G Club) Mondays and Tuesdays at 4:00 pm. All ages/speaking levels welcome!

 

Students:

  • Students are not allowed to stay after school unless they are in an adult-supervised activity. This means even if there is an activity later in the evening (e.g., game, dance, etc), you must go home and arrange for transportation back to the school if you are planning to attend unless you are in an adult supervised activity.
  • Please make sure to check your email daily for messages from the office.
  • All students going to the Library must have a pass and must sign in. There will also be no food, pop or phones in the library.
  • The Health office is closed every day from 10:15 am until 10:45 am.
